Huey P. Long Bridge News Print

The Huey P. Long Bridge Widening Project in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana is now underway. This four-phase project has been long-awaited by local communities and is vital to the recovery of the Greater New Orleans area. The first phase of the project began in April 2006 and the entire project will be complete in 2013.

The Huey P. Long Bridge was opened to traffic in 1935 and has served the New Orleans area residents and visitors in the same capacity for more than 72 years. This widening project will add an additional travel lane and inside and outside shoulders to each side of the bridge- providing a safer, more reliable Mississippi River crossing.

Current traffic impacts -

UPDATE: On Monday July 7, the left west bound bridge lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9, the left east bound left lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Lane closures are subject to change based on weather, wind and site conditions. Alternate routes are the Hale Boggs Bridge and Crescent City Connection. Note: construction work on the Hale Boggs Bridge may not make it the best alternate route. For Hale Boggs Bridge lane closures, visit www.511la.org/.

You can also get these same lane closure updates by calling the 24/7 automated information line at (504)731-4200.
